2014 Storybook Heroes Luncheon for Bookspring

Posted at April 7, 2014 by Comments Off on 2014 Storybook Heroes Luncheon for Bookspring

Austin was visited by literary royalty at the 2014 Storybook Heroes Luncheon–none other than the Cat in the Hat was seen throughout the room at St. David’s Episcopal Church. Luncheon Chairs Mindy Gomillion (aka Thing 1) and Mattie Scheihing (aka Thing 2) worked with an amazing committee to bring the Dr. Seuss books to brilliant life for the thematic décor. Special thanks go to Dwain Osborne for the phenomenal artwork. Emcee Evan Smith (The Texas Tribune) brought the house to order for remarks from Board President The Honorable Amy Clark Meachum and Executive Director Joan Wabschall. They had a lot to be proud of as Bookspring provided over 100,000 books, free of charge, to Austin children in the fiscal year of 2012-2013. Honored at the luncheon was Pat Fuszek–the first Executive Director of Reading is Fundamental in Austin, and 3M for its continued support of Bookspring as encouraged by Russell Bridges. Keynote Speaker Dr. Ari Brown provided outstanding focus on the importance of children’s literacy.
